Default Applique Thread-upper and lower

When you applique, do you use the same thread on the upper and in the bobbin or do you vary the weights. I have some rayon thread that is 40 wt and am not sure what to use in the bobbin. Appreciate any info you can provide.

I normally always use the same in the top as in the bottom; they play so much better that way. The only exception is when I use pre-wound bobbins I may use different bottom thread. This is something really rare for me not to use the same.

I tend to use a bobbin weight like 60wt. when doing applique with rayon or other polyester threads. I find the lower weight on the bobbin and reduced tension helps keep it on the back and not have any pokies showing through. But, you can use the same thread too.

I should probably know this, but I don't. If thread is 40 wt compared to 50 wt, which is thicker?

40 wt. is thicker. 50 wt. is thinner and typically piecing thread. 60 wt. is finer and is used in the bobbin for embroidery, applique etc.

I use 50 but I use Aurifil thread so the 50/2 ply is thinner and strong as well.

I use the same colors in top and bottom, but may use a different weight of thread. Sometimes I use a heavy top tread and a much lighter bottom thread.

I match or blend my colors but I use regular embroidery weight thread in the top and 60 weight in the bobbin.

I use regular poly thread - same or close in color in bottom and top. Same weight too.
