    AQS Des Moines

I have to share my exciting news. My quilt was accepted into the AQS Des Moines show! (It's also going to be in Grand Rapids.) I'm so excited because this show is close enough to my home that I can go to it! I cannot believe my quilt is going to be hanging up there- I've been to this show and I'm not worthy, I've seen the types of things that hang in it! OMG! I'm so excited.

For anyone who thinks they aren't 'good enough'; give it a try! I started this quilt when I had only been quilting for a year- I was a beginner for sure, and I learned so much making it. If you are proud of your quilts, and want to show them off, enter them, you never know if they will be accepted or not! I'm really glad I was encouraged to, because I would have never dared on my own.

Congratulations! That is a lovely quilt, so it's not surprising that it was accepted.

I will get to see your quilt in person! I'm going to the quilt show in Des Moines this year. Congratulations - maybe I will meet you while we are both looking at your quilt!

When and where is the quilt show in Des Moines? How would I get information about it? I don't live too far from there so it would be a "doable" trip/

Absolutely gorgeous shadow trapunto quilt. Did you use Leah Day design's or Geta's instructions for it? I bought Geta's book but have yet to take the plunge. She has gorgeous designs. Congratulations being accepted into a major show. Well deserved and it will be so exciting to see your quilt hanging in the show. Hope you can attend it as well.

Schoolteacher, here is a link to AQS site on DeMoines in October
    http://aqsshows.com/AQSDesMoines/sho...11-quilt-show/

The URL says 2011 but this is definitely the 2013 info

This is Leah Day's design. Her Winter Wonderland pattern has FABULOUS instructions for shadow trapunto, but I had figured out how to do it before I got the pattern. But, I did use all her snowflake designs, and the pattern has marvelous instructions for quilt-as-you-go binding. I couldn't make the wavy bias tape happen though- I tried...

I also love Geta's work, but I think I prefer Leah's method (and what I did before I saw it was her method) of sewing the batting onto the cotton and then cutting. IIRC, Geta sews to the organza, which is a lot more delicate.

I'll also say- since I didn't realize this quilt would be so amazing when I finished, the materials were cheap. I just used Walmart organza, and craft felt. Not the nice organza/wool felt called for by the pattern. Maybe it would look better with those things, but I still think mine looks really good. The center snowflake is actually fleece, as I ran out of felt. I think the fleece has a fluffier better overall look, but it was a huge pain to cut out because of the linty nature of it.
