Default backing fabric choice

Should the backing fabric match the front or doesn't it matter?

Your choice!

For me, preferably some of the backing fabric is used in the front.
Or at the least, something that coordinates with the front.
That might be as simple as go-with fabric colours/prints.
Or possibly a print that goes with the theme of the front.

But that's my personal preference. Do what works best for you.

I usually try for something that coordinates but necessarily matches. All personal preference.

Most of my quilts are backed with muslin, cause by the time I get to that part, it's just one less thing I have to make a decision about.

I usually use muslin for the backing or a sheet.

I prefer to find something in the same color lines, but not necessary to be the same print. I do like my backing to make a "quiet' statement.

i have started using muslin to back just about everything.
it goes with anything.
a really nice quality muslin is much less expensive that the lowest quality [wide] backing fabric.

I have friends that use whatever on the back. But to me, that's the same as having an ugly mattress cover. I see it when I change the sheets. So I like to have something pretty on the back. I love to use extra blocks in a column to make up the needed extra width.

I like to put unexpected fabric on the back. Usually wild. Don't worry about coordinating. Then, it's like having 2 snuggle quilts!
