No, when chain piecing I make sure to have a couple stitches sewn into "space" so that the end stitches on the one piece are fully formed before starting on the next piece.

I also do as thimbebug does - maybe sew 1/4 inch of air between the fabric pieces.

I use a smaller stitch length when chain piecing, like 1.8-2.0. The ends stay together. I find my machine comes unthreaded if I sew without fabric for more than a few stitches.

Nope, I use a slightly smaller stitch and never have a problem with them coming apart.
