    Wink Basic thread color question.

I'm having a bit of a brain freeze regarding thread color (it's been a while since I've bound a quilt). My wallhanging has bright red binding but very light blue (sky) color for the main part of the quilt. I'm gonna machine stitch to the front then hand-stitch it down on the back.

What color thread should I use in the machine? Do I match the bright red binding or go the opposite way to match the main fabric? Does it even matter?

I'm probably making this way more difficult than it needs to be. Sigh.

I personally don't think it matters as it will all be covered if I read your method correctly. That's the way I put my binding on also and all the stitched thread will be covered by the binding as you turn it to the back. That being said, I might just use the red to match the binding if I had it but again I don't think it matters.

You are making it more difficult..... Don't you hate when that happens? Since you won't see it, I don't think it matters. But, if it were me, I would probably use the blue, because if it does show, it will probably be against the blue fabric and if you see the red on the blue, it will be bright. I have started sewing with a 1.8 stitch length and my thread barely shows at any time in any seam.

I would match to the binding unless you want contrast or you could use a variegated thread.

I think match the binding, as well.

Okay, thanks everyone. I'm going to go with the red, but as you all seem to be saying -- it probably doesn't matter a whole lot.
    Happy sewing!

I was thinking this same subject the other day. I normally use the color of the binding when stitching it to the quilt but hand sewing it to the back, wasn't sure if I should have thread match the binding (red) or the back of the quilt (royal blue). I went with red thread matching the binding and it came out fine.

I'd probably sew it with two different colors of thread.

I'd match the binding for front and back. please show us your quilt when you're done.
