i keep my old thread for this task, (even buying at thrift stores) and then baste with a single thread and a loose (1-2 numbers down) bobbin thread...when ready to remove, you just slip out the bobbin thread with one or two pulls and remove the top layer....the older thread yields easily if it has to be ripped...

I would not have thought of this... using the thrift store thread or older thread, good idea!! Thanks

I use a single thread and when I pull it out I thread needles with it to use on the next quilt I am basting.
