I've made dozens of quilts but never used any batik fabrics. I'm looking for a new challenge and thought that would be interesting. Does anyone have any ideas of how to begin with choosing a pattern and how to mix the different colors of batik fabrics to make it harmonious? I'm a fairly knowledgeable quilter.

You can do just about any pattern in batiks. I've been collecting for a few years a 1/2 yd here a yd there and one 15 min. trip to Keepsake Quilting for the background batik (husband was rushing me to get on the Mt. Washington for a trip around Winepesaukee. I made it in time. It has to remain a UFO for a while until I finish quilt for son and DIL. Hope my son still likes it after picking out the fabric 4 or 5 years ago. Guilty of procrastination, plus finding the pattern and all the fabric for an"Egyptian Quilt". Will let you know when it gets off the UFO list.

Choose a pattern you love and make it with batiks. Just about any block or pattern looks good in batiks. They're my fabric of choice and the majority of my quilts are done with batiks.

Batiks really take care of themselves. Choose a pattern and go with it.

I have a friend who just starting quilting. On her own she made a batik quilt and did not tell anyone until it was finished. When she showed us it had to be one of the prettiest and most striking quilts ever. It was just simple blocks of different batiks in purples, teal, pinks, golds and other jewel tones. Her technique was that of a beginner, but the quilt looked like a masterpiece. The fabric makes the quilt and batiks are a sure bet!

I agree with the others. Almost all batiks look good together for some reason, yet they don't always play nicely with other fabrics. Be sure to wash the batiks until the colors don't run.

I happen to be in the middle of a batik (scrappy) quilt right now. Pictures and a link to the pattern (free, from Quiltville) on my blog here:
