    It's the wax and the dye. I have soaked a few in fabric softener just to get them to soften up.

    I agree that different brands feel different. I really like Hoffman and it washes up nice and soft.

    Definitely the brands make a different. Also, where they are made: Indonesia, India, or Africa. The African ones seem to have more wax left in than the others.
