Sometime last year I purchased a roll of Fairfield Batting on line from JoAnn's. It was on sale and the shipping was free with the special code. I'm just now getting around to making a few smaller lap quilts and have used it for the first time. It seems terribly thin. Has anyone used this before, and how did it hold up after washing? Thanks you Ladies!

If it's Fairfield cotton, and assuming it hasn't changed in many years, it is an excellent batting that washes up to be very soft. If it's poly or a combo batting, I don't know.

Not sure about your wording..."thin" vs. lightweight or low loft......all could describe the batting. I prefer low loft for my quilts. Fairfield is a nice brand.

I won a package of this batting as a quilting award and I didn't like it back then. Sometimes you get what you pay for.

I use a 1/4" poly batt with my lap quilts, so that they are soft and conform to curves. I only use Warm 'n Natural on table runners, bowls, and the like. A thin poly batt quilted the 4" or so apart usually suggested has held up really well for me.

I'm not sure what kind of Fairfield batting you purchased. I've made quilted home dec items out of their polyester batting. I don't love it as much as cotton batts, but I've washed it several times & with a bit of reshaping, it's held up okay. The nice thing about it being flatter is that there's less chance of it bunching up like higher loft poly batt.

I did also see their newer bamboo-rayon & cotton blend at my local JAF. I don't like rayon so I haven't used it yet, but it's what Caryl Bryer Fallert-Gentry uses on a lot of her quilts so obviously it has the potential to quilt up nicely. If that's what you bought, it should launder fine since rayon is less prone to wrinkling than cotton & generally provides good definition to quilting.

I prefer thicker, heavier cotton batting (W&P), but I have a friend who loves Fairfield 100% cotton and her quilts do fine in the wash even after years of regular washings.

I like Fairfield Traditional batting and have used it in many quilts. It's hard to find in my area now so I buy Connecting Threads Hobbs batting online when there is a sale. Not long ago a national quilt show Best in Show quilt used Fairfield batting.

As a longarmer, the politically correct response I can give is that it is "not my favorite".
