Default Batting suggestions for pet crate quilt?

As a practice project to start learning how to FMQ, I thought I'd try and still end up with a usable item, so our 3 spaniels will get some snazzy new crate mats. I picked up some clearance fabric at the LQS but just realized the Quilter's Dream request cotton batting I have left from a craft project won't provide enough cushion.

Any suggestions? I need something that can take washing in hot water and being tumble-dried, but I don't want to mess up the FMQ learning project.

    Thanks!

    Michelle

Construct you mat so that it has a closure so the padding can be removed. Use foam rubber to suit your needs.

I would use Warm and Natural or Pellon's Nature's Touch, both of which tend to be readily available at places like JoAnn Fabrics and Walmart.

I made my beagle's pad like a duvet with the top being a quilt i made and put a folded up old comforter inside so everything can be washed. I bet that's clear as mud but it works well for us

My dog would rip it up before I could blink. Just saying. Good luck!

My doggie also likes to chew his bedding a little. He gets cheap fleece blankets from Walmart. Maybe you could use fleece as your batting.

The 'blankies' ours like best are sort of like minkee; no padding in the center, but a 'raised' edge around the perimter. They also have the fake sheepskin type which do have a batting and then cotton backing but still with the raised edge. I would not be afraid to use W&N as a batting. That stuff takes quite a beating and survives nicely.

Thanks for the ideas, everyone. I would definitely do the duvet-cover style if I were making dog bed covers. It's good to hear Warm & Natural can take the washing - that's what my LQS sells and I like supporting them. I'll head out there in the next day or so and see what lofts they have.

    The Posse thanks you :-D
