I use neutral colored cones almost exclusively for piecing and general sewing. I have a cone holder from Superior Threads. Previously, I had one of the cheap, metal holders and it was forever falling over. Because it is in almost constant use, it is worth the sale price I paid for it. I buy colored thread when I need colors. However, I buy the small spools. I think using the right thread is important. I have a large collection of types, sizes and colors. I especially like Superior threads such as King Tut for quilting.

I'm using cones more often these days on my Janome since I was able to get some good deals on Aurifil cones a while back and the dealer gave me a double thread holder when I bought my machine. I generally use spools for my classroom/traveling machines. Of course, I use mostly cones on my Innova.

I mostly usually use cone thread to piece and quilt. I buy silver, eggshell, tan or gold. If the thread is going to show such as when I'm making a raggy quilt I buy spool thread to match the color I'm seaming or quilting.

I love the big superior thread cones -- they last forever and my machine loves the thread. Most of my scones are gray, beige or white. Before I bought the cones, I bought a spool to make sure it worked on all of my machines. I have one of the clover thread stands that I use all the time. It works great.
