Exclamation binding with silk?

Hi all,

I need some advice. I have made 2 tshirt quilts for my cousin out of shirtls that belonged to her mother. Her Mom passed last year so they are really special. She wants me to bind them in silk like a baby blanket. I'm not comfortable with this and don't think I have the skill level. I also don't think it will work well or look right. What do you guys think? Do you think a silk binding would work?

Thanks.

Tina

Does she want it made of fabric that is real silk?

Or does she want something that is slippery/shiny/satiny?

There are satiny/shiny fabrics available that are made of polyester or nylon - this is one version of binding available:

These are fairly durable.

Oh boy, look up some tutorials on this. I was thinking if some interfacing of a sort could be ironed onto the silk that may help it. Not sure.

I've worked with silk a lot on garments. I wouldn't bind anything in silk. You could use one of the so-called "silky" fabrics that are made of synthetics. They would hold up well to washing and to wear. You can even buy blanket binding that is probably what the woman is thinking of.

Google silk blanket binding. I don’t think it is actual silk but it should be easier to buy it ready made.

Don't you mean satin? It's a heavier fabric and often is the binding for baby blankets.

I used the store bought satin binding for a baby quilt and it went on very easily. its already double and you only have to sew it around from the front and it also catches the back at the same time. No problem but with a t shirt quilt I would no use that Just my opinion

I don't think anything but cotton would look good on a t-shirt quilt. Just my opinion.
