My local Wal-Mart is being remodeled and I noticed they are sort of bringing fabric back. I saw 2 yard packages being sold for $7. 1 yard packages of like high quality cotton quilting fabric for $5. The selection is not like it used to be when they had the fabric wall. I doubt that I will be buying fabric from the new fabric section, but thought some others might be interested to hear about it.

Joann's is now selling 3 yard packages of the solid 100% cotton colors (so far 5 colors - black, white, tan, red, blue). Price is $12.99, which works out to about $4.25 per yard. Quality appears to be the same as what they have on their fabric wall - I purchased all the colors and immediately washed them. They appear to be OK - I'll have to work them into my current projects to have a final opinion on the overall quality.

For me at the time, it was a great convenience to have the pre-cut fabric since I was trying to complete a quilt (needed backing). It sounds like this may be a trend in the industry to boost sales in a down economy (and so they don't have to hire folks to cut the material - less labor costs for the store).

Ours has &/or has had some of the prepackaged but it does not seem to be selling very well until it goes on clearance. One of the fabric ladies said "Folks here want to pick their own and cut it themselves." (referring to the jelly rolls and fat quarters that were more expensive than the yardage).

One WalMart about 20 miles from me has a full fabric line. It has all the quilt of the month fabric, all the Pellon products and Warm and Natural batting on the bolt. I buy 3 or more yards of every new David Textile fabric I find there. I noticed that there was pre packaged panels to make a stuff 18" doll, doll clothes, and accessories for girl and doll. They were very cute! There were some fabric books packages too. Also pre packaged fabric to make pillowcases. Any Walmart store can order these from the warehouse. It's up to the fabric dept manager. Walmarts that have no cutting table can't order bolts but can order any of the pre packaged fabrics. Fat quarters, jelly rolls, fat eights, charm packs and now Walmart has pre packaged 1 yard cuts of decent looking fabric of good quality. i was talking to the fabric dept manager there and she said many fabric managers order the fabric cuts that they know will not sell. This way they can justify not ordering it. Most do not like fabric taking up room on the limited shelf space. This fabric dept manager is a quilter and she orders what she knows quilters will want.

This manager orders bolts of batting, muslin or other by the bolt product anyone wants to buy a whole bolt of. She has a big thick book with everything listed that she can get.

The walmart here has gotten rid of all of the fabric. The only thing resembling fabric is some clearanced pillowcase kits. Also we are getting a new Walmart Supercenter and the cashier told me that they won't have fabric either. I read that new walmarts are supposed to have it but apparently not this one. Joann's is the only place that sells fabric around here now.
