I saw this on BB blog and made a scrappy rendition that looks like the attached image from my EQ files. I forego the 3" border as it is 88 x 104 without it. Note the outer "ring" of star blocks with 1" finished blocks in the center. I used over 550 2 1/2" squares in the 71 checkerboard blocks alone. There is no reason why you couldn't use HST in the FG blocks around the star square. I used the no waste FG method on the star blocks...used lots of stash in this one!

A member here on this forum, quilter1430, posted a scrappy HST quilt in August of last year and it was wonderful. I too had a "boatload of HST" that were 2.5 inches, and made a quilt using Quilter1430's pattern. It was a fun project and turned out beautifully. It is posted in the link to her post below:

This site has a slew of free scrappy quilts full size pictures to print off patterns, many which I liked. However, I could not access her few free tutorials, which included one on how to dehydrate pumpkin; other 3 were on quilting. I was interested in the pumpkin one.

Thanks, Jingle...here's the quilt IRL. I didn't put the 3" border on...it's big enough without it.

Here is a favorite way to use half-square triangles and 2.5" squares. I made a mistake on the pink background one. The dog on the top right was facing the wrong way. Instead of remaking it, I named the quilt "Don't Sniff My Butt!" LOL!
