I got a deluxe bobbin winder for Christmas. The only reason I want one is that I have about 30 vintage machines that take quite a few different bobbins and it's super quick to fill up a bunch of different ones at once using cone thread. I also have a Kenmore that is prone to the bobbin winder breaking. It's a part that's no longer available, so I don't use it on that particular machine. I spent about 30 mins. filling a ton of bobbins with neutral color thread and I should be good to go for a while. Other than my specific reasons I wouldn't have bought a bobbin winder if I just had a few machines.

I use the side winder, to wind almost all my bobbins. Just works great. If it broke I would go buy another one.

Side winder for me. I love it. I knw some folks say its flimsy, and it is, but it does the job.

I use the sidewinder with my Singer and Burnette, but my Viking bobbins don't fit on it, so I use my machine for those.

Thanks for your input ladies.
I bought a side winder this past week on sale and hopefully I will put it to good use.
Hope it doesn't sit there unused while I use the one on my machine.

I switched to pre wounds. I use FilTec Glide Delights magna bobbins and Superior pre wound. If I need an exact color I will wind my own usually with the machine I'm using to sew with it. I rarely have bobbin thread issues when using the prewounds. One machine I can't use prewounds so I have to wind them using that machine.

On my Janome and Viking I use the machine, but for my Singers and the Europro I use the Sidewinder. For me it is just easier.

I tried pre-wound bobbins and the thread was so bad! At first it was breaking in the machine and I thought it was the machine. So took it out and the thread would break so easily in my hands. I believe there was 1- bobbins and all the thread was like that. It was so bad, I couldn't even use it to baste. They were given to me, so couldn't return it. I did ask where it was purchased and it turned out to be from a vendor at a quilt show. So I now just buy a cone of thread and wind 10 at a time. (Surprising how fast I go thru those.)
