A friend of mine worked in a "sewing hole" and came over to help me with an industrial serger my sister had been given and passed on to me. She winds a bobbin while she is sewing so she always has another bobbin ready to go. Check your machine to see if that's a possibility. It works on my old Singer Stant-a-Matic.

I have the Sidewinder and love it. I bought it at Hancock's for $14.95 on one of their big weekend sales.
Addicted to Crafts has everything on their site at 25% off until Sept 23.
Their price with discount is $23.00.

I save my leftover thread for the hand finishing also. I just leave it on the bobbin until I need it.
I have also bought lots of bobbins on ebay for $9.99 for 50. I like that price and haven't been able yet to beat it because the shipping was free.

I wind a few bobbins at a time. My machine does not interfere with the threaded part of the machine to thread additional bobbins if I have to.
Some of the machines have larger bobbins and do not run out as fast.
I think it's just one of those gnarly tasks that makes you stop and pay attention.

Depending on the project, I usually fill about 6 bobbins for a quilt. Each time I am sewing a longer piece of fabric (usually borders) I check to see if I am running low. I change the bobbin before I run out - I usually have no problems. When buying threads for a quilt with specific colors, I buy 2 spools of thread - 1 for bobbins and 1 to thread through my machine. Good luck!
