Boo Boo with binding.

That's narrower than what I do (I cut 2 1/4" or 2 1/2") but the purpose of binding is to enclose the raw edge of your quilt. So long as that is done, size doesn't matter. LOL.

It looks good that way actually but wasn't sure how many quilting rules I broke doing it this way. Should I take it off and start over with larger binding strips ?

I would not tell anyone that it was a mistake, just pretend you planned that new style of binding for that quilt because it looks better that way. Before you know it, your quilting friends will copy it. The quilt police might even change their rules! LOL!,

Glad to hear what I did wasn't that unusual (but not glad you did it)
I used it as an artistic accent, left it on the right side, and just added another binding
