I was going to suggest ants because of the picnic angle, but the watermelon and ants is even better.

The fabric you chose is good, but I'd put a narrow strip of a solid first to contain the colors in the quilt. Green, maybe?

Watermelon fabric is perfect since one of the blocks is of a watermelon. Very nice summer quilt.

I was going to suggest red gingham, and then you came up with the watermelon/ants fabric - perfect! As Irishrose suggested, I would put a narrow stop border to enclose the blocks. Maybe in solid red?

I was thinking the same thing about a narrow inner border...then your 5 inch border and I think polka dots would be cute.

A dark green like in the flower stem blocks would contrast nicely with the blocks and go with the leaf border of the fall quilt on the other side. ( A green color may make it easier when you choose a binding to work with both sides of the quilt). Both tops are lovely.

I was leaning toward a color that would bring out the colors of the center block that has the word Summer in it. Your fall one does that. But then came the suggestion of the picket fence and I really like that idea!

I was all set to say a nice medium blue until I saw the second photo of your companion quilt. Scrap the blue. I agree that the checker board pattern would follow the theme of summer. Maybe even ladybugs or ants. Fun quilt!
