I don't like the gray. I don't think it does anything for the quilt. I would probably use just the black.mas for washing, finish the quilt, then go to a laundromat and use their large machines. Your home machine just will not do the job.

Agree 100%!

Spend the money and take it to the laundramat. Wash it in one of the large washers. You don't want all the fuzz in your washer or dryer.

I never wash until it has been quilted and the binding has been completed.

No advice on washing. I don't care for either gray. I would just use the black. Bind with that black print (with the tiny yellow flowers and white squiggles) Nice quilt. Will be lovely when it gets all frayed out!

I had to wash out part of a quilt top because one of my cats anointed it. I washed it by hand - dried it on a drying rack - and it was a MESS!!!!

Well you have decided what to do (love the grey circle fabric). Please post a pic when it's done....it looks fantastic so far.

I once washed a top only and it all fell apart. Would advise against doing that.

I think a black or charcoal solid; then gray circles.

...after it is quilted. If you machine wash it before it is done, you could end up with a nightmare instead of a quilt. I would also take it to a laundromat and use the the 'big boy' style washer so it has lots of water to swim in. Please post an 'after' so we can see it 'bloomed'?
