Default Braid Quilt Width?

I have some panels 10" square (Catitude) and I want to make a column quilt with braids the same width - 10"

Now there are plenty of How To tutorials out there - not the problem. But there are no charts that give width of strip - length of strip and width of final braid. So 8 don't know how long to cut my strips to get them to match.

I happen to be using 2.5 jelly roll.

Thanks in advance

If I got this right, you need the first strip same length as your block. The next strip on the adjacent side would be 2 inches longer. Unless you are adding corner stones to the braid. Then the strips would be the same length on both sides with the cornerstone added to the second strip

Pennyhal, if your strips are cut at 2.5”. Then that is the size your cornerstones would be cut. They fit in at the point of your center square and travel down the center of the braid. If you look up French Braid quilt you will see what I mean

According to Donna Jordan tut here, her 9 patch square is made from 2 1/2 jelly roll, so her 9P should be 6inch finished ( with seams to JR strip) She cut her strips 10 inches I think it said. So 4 inches more than your center square panel is what I’m understanding but using the 2 1/2 in black sq too. According to that you would cut yours 4 inches more than your 10inch cat panel square or 6 inches longer than your cat panel square if you don’t use a center stone like her black here. At least that is my understanding.

if the link doesn’t work just go to Jordan fabrics site and look at free patterns. It’s a runner but that’s all columns are.

Toogie, thanks for posting this. I forgot about the extra needed to accommodate the strips on the opposite side of the center square. Good thing I wasn’t making one myself at this time

The Donna Jordan Tut has the 9 patch put on point. The panels will not be on point. Now she DOES say that with a 10" strip length the final width is 12"....so 8" cut? I am not using cornerstones, but I do want to cut the backside at the 45 to save on fabric.

I've currently got strips of paper all over my cutting mat trying to mock this up. Its not that easy!
