    Default Brightly quilt pattern

I bought a layer cake as the patten said one layer cake. I cannot get 16 2 1/2 squares from one ten inch square. The last cut is always a bit off of 2 1/2" . I had to buy a charm pack to finish out the pattern. Ugh. Anyone use one layer cake and have enough? I used Windom layer cake as suggested on the pattern.

I used fat quarters when I made mine, was the size of the layer-cake correct? I find many to be less than accurate. And don’t forget starching can cause shrinkage as well. I am so sorry for your frustrations, it is a beautiful pattern and I can't wait to see yours.

I think it is beautiful too. I happen to find the charm pack of the fabric and was lucky as it is sold out most everywhere. If you have a layer cake put back to make this quilt I would buy a couple of fat quarters to match or blend to be on the safe side. Be sure to read the amount of the 2 1/2 squares you need to match and cut those first.

I'm not familiar with the pattern, but speaking from experience about cutting multiple squares from a single larger piece - I sometimes find out I do better by cutting the ten inch square into 5" x 10", (x2) then cut that unit into 5" x 5" (x2, x2= 4 five inch squares) then each of these will give your four 2 1/2" squares.

And I start by measuring the square to make sure it really is 10x10. Then, instead of cutting 2 1/2 inches 3 times, being right handed, I measure from the left and make my first cut at 7 1/2 inches and then the next at 5 inches and finally a 2 1/2 inch cut. If there is a tad of discrepancy, it is spread across all the cuts more evenly. I try to keep the piece nice and straight, turn my cutting mat 90 degrees and repeat the process.

One reason why I don't buy pre-cuts any longer as they're rarely cut on the straight of grain or correctly. Rather cut from my own stash and know I'm fairly sure I'll cut correctly most times.

I also have this pattern, but haven't gotten around to it yet. I'm writting down the information from GingerK and putting it with the pattern. Hopefully it willl go smoothly.

Layer cakes vary, as you can tell. Whenever I use one, I try to incorporate some of my stash yardage for just such things as this. Never hurts to have a little extra just in case.
