I'm always on the lookout for machines at estate sales. I'm still watching for a backup Artista. I haven't found that one yet! But I did find a white FW at an estate sale for $50 because it was not working at the time. All it took was a couple days of oiliing and it works like a charm.

I'm a little confused about the OP asking why you have to push a lever for reverse. I'm not sure why that would be odd. You're gonna have to do something to tell the machine you want it to go in reverse. Sewing machines can't read your mind. Yet! A lever seems as good as anything.
