Every couple of years I seem to end up making another double irish chain. Funny how I have never kept one for myself, every one I have made was a quickie project for a gift.

I seem to be paper piecing scraps into either log cabins (4-5 inches) or Michigan string blocks (quilterscache.com) all the time. Have piles of them. I assemble these into anything from pot holders to string quilts, whatever is needed fast for a present.

About 40 or more years ago, out homemakers club started making charity quilts for those in the area who had had a house fire or other tragic thing happen to the family. We each made a big 9-patch and we sewed them together and just "birthed" them. Then we started making 6 inch squares and put them together in Trip Around the World, or a diagonal pattern. Today I found out that that is called Stairway to Heaven. I've made dozens and dozens of those. If there is a benefit for the family, they are sold at auction, and sometimes we give another one to the family, also. I have been putting on the bindings for about 30 years now. Sometimes it is back wrapped over front. But I do enjoy putting on bindings with double folded fabric and machine sew it onto the front. Now I would use glue and fold to the back and stitch in the ditch from the front. It would be just as easy.

I have more than one favorite quilt pattern, but I love to make baby quilts with a simple 6.5" square of the main focus fabric, with a 9-patch in coordinating fabrics. It goes together quickly, and makes a nice gift. I have also done several Warm Wishes quilts, which also go together quickly. I also like making the sawtooth or 8-pointed star, I cut strips 7" x wof, then subcut to 6.5 center blocks and the remainder in 3.5 inch strips. I also use this block when making table runners, as the 3.5" strips also make a good border. These are my "go-to" blocks when I need a quilt in a hurry.

The one pattern I can remember making several times is a 3-D pinwheel that I like to use for kids quilts. I also made several quilts using a pieced cat block. Sometimes I enjoy making a pattern over and over; sometimes I like trying something new.

Roman Road....it is great for memory quilts....I make them as the grands graduate from high school....5 down, 6 to go!!!

Love the turning twenty! It is the only one I have done several times! I want to do a scrappy in a turning twenty! Have yet to do a log cabin but it is high on my list,!
