I use wide fabrics all the time for whole cloth, for piecing, for applique backgrounds, and even sometimes for a quilt back. As with all fabrics there are good quality wide fabrics and poor quality. My favorite for whole cloth quilts is cotton sateen - I purchase mine from fabric.com. Makes Beautiful whole cloth quilts.

My 18 year old does the same thing. Hates something heavy on him. He will wear double pj's if he has too but on top of the quilt it is. I think it has to do with not putting anything on him as a baby in the crib.

I think the answer to your original question is yes, you can use wide backing for a whole cloth quilt. But my question is, why bother? They sell decent quality quilts for a pittance of what you will invest in time and material for a quilt that will take hard wear with him sleeping on top of it. If you are wanting something with your own touch, can you do something special with the fleece that he uses as a cover?

It is so funny you said that. I cannot sleep without something on me, even a sheet, even on the couch, no matter how hot it is! I have always attributed it to my Mother always covering me as a baby! LOL
