What a meaningful use of time--for all of you. I think it'll be work, but very worthwhile and the kids will make something that will last: a quilt and memories. They will learn they either love sewing or they don't; either way it's a great way to find out. Great that you can use JoAnn. That's a brilliant solution.

You'll have fun, no doubt about it!
Jelly roll race is easy, but sewing all those pieces together at the ends - before the race is started - can be discouraging to a little one. My then 8 year old nephew (now 16) started one and never went back because he was underwhelmed with that.
Perhaps a wider strip set, say 4", done like a jelly roll would go fast enough to keep them interested. 4 patch is nice , too, because they see the results quickly.\
What ever you do, have a blast doing it! And make sure Grampa stays the whole time. They are his grands, after all.

So wonderful of you to take this on. I have worked with my great niece on several quilts and she learned a lot. We haven't done much the last 2 years because life got super busy for both of us but things are settling back down now and hopefully we can get back to it.
Her first quilt was simple squares sewn together, bordered, and then layered, birthed, and tied. It was a lap throw size so she was not overwhelmed by the size. She is still so proud of it. I took her to JoAnn's and let her pick out the fabric she used and she loved doing that part also.

What a great experience all of you will have for 2 weeks! Thanks for taking the time to help 2 young girls learn the art of sewing a quilt. Their grandpa is a wise man! Please show pics of what you all did!

For the next two weeks I am working with a groups of about 10 girls on letter pillows. The pattern is Simplicity pattern 1579 Sewing patterns for Dummies. Each girl cuts out the first letter of her first name, Sewing them together and then stuffing them with fiberfill. Then they hand sew the opening closed. The pillows are about 12 inches high. I even have boys involved too. If they are interested. They can also do the first letter of their last name also. It’s a great fun project. I think McCalls also have a pattern too.
