    Default cathedral quilt

    Hello all of you wonderful ladies (and men)! I am wondering what the yardage needed for a cathedral window quilt.
    I will be using muslin. I am not sure of the size, because it seems a daunting task! lol. I hear I need to buy it all at the same time but it seems to me you could probably match muslin fairly easy. If you know the yardage for all sizes, great. But I am leaning toward full size. Also, have any of you made them, how long did it take and I would love to see pics! Any advice appreciated! Oh, I plan to make it all by hand.

    You are correct. You should buy all your muslin at one time. Dye lots vary. This may help:

    If you have a JoAnn's, Hobby Lobby or Hancock's in your area, I'd suggest waiting until you have a 40% or 50% coupon and just buy a whole bolt. I always buy muslin by the bolt, to do test blocks, foundations for string blocks, lining for bags and pouches, and as covering for my little ironing table. Since there are several different methods to make CWs, you need to Google and find a pattern/instructions that will give you the yardage requirements, which will not only depend on the size of the quilt you want to make, but the finished size of the squares.
    I've never made a full Cathedral Window quilt, but I did make this. Of course, it was all done by machine.

    You must explain how you got the turnover to match the insert, or am I not looking at it right..... It's cool!

    I made one Cathedral Window. It started out to be a lap quilt and wound up being a pillow. I made it all by hand. I wish I could post a picture of it but the dog ate it. I'm not saying that just to be funny. He really did.

    I made a queen sized cathedral window for my DD and her DH for their 25th wedding anniversary. I think I had it done by their 27th (broke my arm during that time, too). I had heard that it would take 25 yds of muslin so I bought a bolt of 50 yds from my LQS. I know, it was more than I could have spent at Jo-Anns but it was so much better quality. I figured if I was going to spend that much time making something special, I needed to use good fabric. And, I'm glad I did. I still have some that I use for other things but I didn't run out.

    Here's a picture of it..... it's big enough to hang over the sides like a bedspread. And, I used the tutorial here on QB to make it. The muslin square was cut 8 3/4" and the centers were 2x2" squares.

    In order to determine the amount of fabric you will need, you first need to determine what size square you intend to use. The pattern I have said to make 9 inch squares with the white foundation fabric - depending on the size of the quilt - you said you weren't sure - so assuming you buy 45 wide, for a crib you need 9 yards, twin - 21 yards and full 26 yards. If you can find the 90" wide fabric then crib is 4 yards, twin is 9 yards and full is 12 yards.

    The other information my pattern gave me - # of squares per width of fabric in in 9" inch strips
    36" muslin = 3 squares
    45" = 4 squares
    60" = 6 squares
    90" = 9 squares

    I did buy mine all at once too. But I have not made any yet - too many distractions.

    According to my instructions the 9 inch square of foundation fabric - comes to 4 inch completed square and the insert piece is 2 1/4 inch.

    Also, for the insert fabric is says for crib - 3/4 yard, twin - 1 1/2 yards, full - 2 yards. (I wanted different fabrics so bought a couple charm packs that were on sale.

    Hope this helps.

    My mother made 4 CWs over about a five year span, all were bed quilts.
