I have a crocheted one in my UFO box upstairs. It is a gift for my next door neighbor because she attends many classes and workshops. I just got to where it wasn't going the way I wanted it to. I will dig it up to share.
I like the idea of using a measuring tape as part of it. Very useful.
I have seen some of the little metal accessories for these at Hancock fabrics.
