I've always found daisies, loops and leaves to be the easiest, because I can envision them and "see" them on the quilt as I go. I use them like others use a meander... I can't meander for anything! I just can't "see" it!

Jan has provided some terrific ideas. When in doubt I do a cross hatch and, knock wood, it has served me well.

Here's the quilt. Mostly 3.5in squares sewn into blocks, plus some four-patch.
