Your new one is a great compromise!
But I have to admit that I would be challenged to 'fix' the old one, maybe by just adding a new backing (you said it didn't have batt to begin with) do some meandering on it and give it new binding by just adding the new binding over the old. Nothing fancy, not a lot of work but would kind of keep the original top intact. Unless it is coming apart unmercifully.

I'd say you did a great job re-creating the older quilt. Perhaps you might want to write some of the history of the older quilt on the newer quilt, with maybe a photo transfer of the older quilt as a label. I do agree that the older quilt was well loved and I'm amazed that as much of it has survived so long. I like the newer quilt very much. I just thought of something, perhaps there is enough of the older quilt in a decent condition so that you could frame it and hang it on the wall along with the quilt's history. Just a suggestion. It looks great! And the back story is sweet...I also love the darker/brighter pink...like it is for a girl who is just a lil older now!!
Wondering if you could make a color copy of the picture of the old quilt onto fabric, just a small pic, and then attach it to the back of the new one??..kinda like a lil quilt label...just a thought...

Credits are due you for recreating, but I would still have a hard time parting with the original quilt. I just redid a tied baby quilt for a gal whose grandmother made it for her and now has her own child. The ties all came out when laundered and the batting was not attached to the binding, turned back from the front, and the batting all came to the middle. I took it apart, replaced the worn batting and sewed it into the binding stitching, retied it and wha-la, an almost new looking quilt to pass down to another generation.
