    Default Color advice?

This quilt has not turned out at all like I thought it would. I had no plan for the center when I started it; I just wanted to see if I could do it. The star, after a minor adjustment, turned out quite nice, but was too small for bed-sized quilt, so I decided to add borders to it. Twice I had to change my plan because the quilt was bigger than I calculated. Turns out, a quilt will do that when you put a border on Both sides of it . Instead of the current outside border, I wanted a dog-tooth border, but the math kept messing me up and I got impatient and just added the rectangles.

Now I want to add Sawtooth Stars and Corner Beam stars to the quilt, but I'm out of bright colored solids. Since I have a lot of white in the center, then a band of dark, could I use the pastel-ish colors I have laid out with a white background? This will be the last pieced border. I may or may not add one final solid border after the stars. Also, my stars will finish at 8". Does anyone know of any other stars based on a grid of 4 or 8?

I love medallion type quilt and that is just stunning! I think the pastels harmonize well with the center, but for some reason I want to see a medium to charcoal grey so that the background of the stars will be a darker value than the pastels. Not sure though... might be a bit too much going on.

Fantastic colors in your quilt and I really like the addition of the rectangles! I think those pastels will be just fine for the border, can't wait to see it finished..

LOVE the happy colors in your quilt! How about a piano key border instead of the rectangles. Or a pieced border around two opposite corners -- so helpful when you can't figure out the math, or when you DID figure it out but it didn't fit! (Like the incomplete one below.) About your folded fabric colors....they are more complementary than the rectangles in pink/purple IMO.

I believe those will look great. You may want to consider another thin floater border before the sawtooth border? Floater border could be the orange in your stack.......transitions to next design a little smoother and gives separation in the color change to pastels...just a thought....regardless, whatever you do will be fabulous..

I think the pastels will work because you already have a pink/green pastel half square triangles border in the quilt.

    That is absolutely gorgeous!

As far as the pastels, I'd get the quilt on the wall or floor, place the fabrics around it and take a photo to see how they look. I rely so much on my camera to make design decisions! I can't get very far away from my design wall in my small room.

I have a set of stars ready. I just need the cornerstones, which will be Lemoyne Stars. I think they will have the grey background and the stars will either be the same yellow as the small border, or they will contain the four pastel colors of that round. I liked the idea of another plain border, but it created 4" on each side, and my stars are 8". I also liked Paper Princess's idea of introducing charcoal grey, especially near the very outside of the quilt, so I made four DIS units to put at the center of each side. The center of each side also has the red SIS unit in that round, so that keeps the centers consistent. The outside border will be the grey, and the back will be a bargain fabric I found at Hancock's in Chattanooga when they were going out of business. I showed it to Emmaline and she squealed and said she loves it, so that was easy.
