You have described my design board to a "tee". that's exactly what I did and I love it. Can pin a quilt up or just put blocks without pins. I wrapped the felt around it and pinned it on the edges to keep it in place. the board is not attached to my wall, just pressure fit between the floor and ceiling.

have it covered with felt, but will in the future I hope.

I don't have a lot of space for a "permanent" design board. I do have french doors separating my sewing room from the living room. Over these, I pin a flannel sheet; then I use *that* as my design board. If I need to take it down, I can keep the fabric on it, and just roll it up.
