Ticking makes a great background for applique...you can use any colors that you like!

I would say check out some of the fabric lines and see which one tickles your fancy. To me (without seeing it) the colors you describe reminds to me of the new england beachy saltbox look. That would mean a powder blue with those colors in the print. Blue, grey, cream, sand, and white.

But, you could find a brown floral print with the grey and cream in it and go that way too. Kinda cottage shabby look. Painted distressed furniture, florals, and feminine accents. Brown, cream and grey with a touch of green.

Then there is the 60s soft look with large paisleys that is very popular now. You just need to find one with those colors as a part of the print to make it all work together. Simple lines on the furniture, watercolor paintings on the walls and some metal accents.

I love the look of the ticking fabrics along with other colors....the "retro" feel of it especially...I think since its charcoal and cream that it is really pretty neutral and you can put most anything with it...maybe even make a couple of different ones and change them out....(says the girl who has so many ufos I should be on a Roswell special....lol). Be sure and post some pics of what you decide to do, ok?

Toile in any color-green, blue, red, black or even pink. I love toile and ticking together, and having charcoal as a base pretty much opens you up to any accent color.

I say take that fabric to the store and look at all the combinations that suit your fancy. That's the fun part! I will put that fabric across my cart or on the table at the quilt shop and lay all kinds of stuff with it. One or two will just talk to me and that will be the winner! If it's not screaming to you "I'm the one - I'm the one!" - Put it back and look some more. It will reveal itself to you pretty quickly. Don't rule out anything until you look at it side by side. Depends on what the overall look/feel of the room to be! You could go Americana with reds, blues, bandana, and geometrics like stars. Or, you could go 50's with a fun graphic like red cherries and black trim. Or, you could easily go country with dusty colors and lush florals. If it were me? I'd go for a modern urban look, as that's what my whole house looks like, and stick with greys, creams, graphits, blue-greys, and a bit of chocolate brown to make it pop. I'd also consider adding a bit of velvet or dupioni to make it a little more luxurious feeling.

I would use strong colors and no small prints (I think they would loose their impact). Solids, tone on tone, florals....

Large florals work great with ticking. and solids. i love ticking. Remember when pillows and mattresses were made with ticking. And dish towels.
