squaring quilt with built in borders
While I have been a member of the Board for the past year, this is my first post. I truly enjoy reading what you write and so appreciate learning from you. My sister has made a beautiful quilt for her granddaughter. The border is built into the quilt. She asked me today how to square such a quilt. (I usually square it prior to adding borders.) Can any of you help me answer her question?

Is it a preprinted panel with a border around the edge? I have found that very few of those are printed square. I have ended up cutting away the border, squaring the panel and adding another border before sandwiching and quilting. If it is already quilted, I don't know how to square a preprinted border without it looking crooked.

how much (squaring) does it need? is it wonky? start with measuring, each side, top & bottom- then measure diagonally- top right to bottom left, top left to bottom right- figure out where it is out of square- then i generally try to find a straight line/seam that i can use to start- line up ruler- trim the least amount necessary to get that side straight- turn the quilt- line up bottom of ruler along the straight edge you just cut- (with any luck also lining up with a straight seam/line on the new side- trim- -- turn, repeat for all 4 sides.
