Default DIY machine quilting hoop

I have a PVC hoop that I have used for needlepoint for years. I was wondering if I could put no slip tape or fabric on the back and use it for sit down machine quilting. I really don't want to spend $100 for a Martinelli hoop, although I have one of their rotary cutters and love it. Has any one else done a DIY machine quilting hoop?

Have you seen the Gyspy Quilting Hoops? I actually use them more often than my Martinelli Hoops. You can find the Gyspy Quilting Hoops on Amazon for less than 20.00. You get the set of two for 19.41.

If you made sure that the hoop was down flat on the machine bed , it would work to keep the sandwich taut. The problem might be having to move it without hitting the machine harp.

I think the key issue would be, does it grip firmly and stay in place? If you can make one that does that, go for it!

Here is a link that has the video of how to use the gypsy quilter. It's a short video but gets the point across. They show all of their products. Cost $23.00 here.

www.gypsyquilter.com

Hope this helps in making your decision on which to use.
