Since one of the advantages of Big Stitch is that it shows no matter what, I would play that up and use a color that really jumps out, like the orange.

When I do big stitch I want it to show and be part of the pattern. I would use multiple bright colors.

I would match the yellow color of the middle patch in the third row down. I think it would be striking contrast against the black and the other colors.

For my eyes, black on black would be difficult. I agree with those who recommend a color or colors of the blocks. I really like the quilt and big stitch quilting will be attractive.

I would use the different bright colours of the pin wheels in the black areas.

I love using the Sulky thread Blendables in 12 wt. for my Big Stitch projects because I want the stitching to become part of the overall design. Blendables are threads that change color every 2-5 inches. They are long staple 100% cotton threads.
This link will show you the colors available in the 330yd spools. I particularly like jewel tones #713-4109, peacock plume #713-4016, Fiesta #713-4041, Tropical #713-4043, and Primaries #713-4106 for your project.

I would use black on the inside edge of the triangles and maybe a multi color bright on the outside of the pinwheels.
