What Pattern Would You Suggest For Student New To Quilting?

I agree that rail fence is a good one, and has the advantage that you don't need to purchase a pattern. Another good one (my first quilt) is yellow brick road, but there is a pattern for that one.

I would recommend the Rainbow Flip Quilt. It's beginner friendly, and, it goes together really quickly.
There's a free tutorial at this link: http://www.play-crafts.com/blog/quilt-top-rainbow-flip/
How nice of you to introduce someone to quilting!! Be sure to warn them how addicting it can be!!!

Sarah's Choice is good for teaching HST and FG. if she's interested in handwork, then maybe applique or g-ma's flower garden. log cabin is another to work on the 1/4" seam and accuracy--plus it can be used so many ways. And Drunkard's path is good for curved stitching.

I have a dear friend who had No sewing experience, but wanted to learn to sew and quilt. We started with a couple of table runners and coasters then went to the jelly roll quilt, easy and fast to sew together for quick results, she made 6 of these in no time. Now she has started with easy blocks and is having a blast. I think perhaps one should start with a 4 patch pattern if you don't want to do the strips like a jelly roll.
