Debbie, they are string quilt blocks. Look at old quilt books and pictures. That will give you many ideas as how to go about the finish process. You have a treasure on your hands. post pictures when you get finished. Good luck. Kathi Thompson

They look like spiderweb to me. They are such pretty old fabrics. I'd add triangles to make the blocks square.

This is reminiscent of string piecing... done in the thirties and earlier. The were often pieced on newspaper and then put together. In some very old quilts in good condition you can even still see the newspaper foundation.

I think I would go with amma's idea and applique them onto squares of fabrics. It will show them off very well. They will make a beautiful quilt.

Debbie I would applique them on a backing. Thus not disturbing there originality. Trying to block em up U will actually change them.

I agree with some that this is a Spider Web block. There use to be a quilt book in print (Scrap Quilt - strips and spider webs) by Marcia Lasher. It was a "A Quilt in a Day" publication. There are templates for each of the two designs. This is a really fun quilt to piece and put together. Not much problem with squares not being the same because you cut your foundation fabric all the same size. An excellent way to use scraps. :D

Debbie, it looks like someone tried to guess how to make a Dresden Plate pattern, that was all the scraps they had. I own about 1,000 quilt books with all kinds of patterns.
The more I looked at it, that was my guess, try fitting the triangles between the others on another block, or use it as the center of the quilt and keep adding triangles all the way around, and when it's big enough add you border, I go to a lot of yard sales and estate sales looking for books and fabric, and picked up some quilt pieces the other day at an estate sale, some one started and I had never seen the pattern before. I'm going to another one Saturday, I hope this info helps.

This looks like some of the work I have seen Kaye Woods do. You might find a web site for her. I think these might be stripped piced and then cut into the "triangles".
