Do you usually make a test block before making your quilts?

I always make a test block, especially if it involves lots of the same or like. For instance, my next quilt will be the Snake River Log Cabin by Judy Martin. I have to make a number of four different blocks. you bet, I am going to test these as a lot of cutting and sewing is involved.

I thought it would be a good idea that way you will see if you like the block before cutting up all of your fabric.
Your thoughts please! Thanking you in advance.

On unfamiliar blocks yes. For instance I am trying to make a hunter star quilt - my first one - and still am making practice blocks until I get it right. Am now working on doing it with paper piecing and still don't feel confident enough to use the fabric I have for the quilt so am using up odds and ends of fabric.
