I understand picking cotton is very painful due to the thorns. Is this still true or is it now done by machine?

Your pictures brought back wonderful memories. As a child growing up in south Georgia, I'd visit my grandmother who grew cotton. Occasionally, she'd let me pick cotton. I probably got in the way of her cotton pickers; but she always paid me for the little bit I picked. My uncle owned a cotton gin. It was about a block from my house. I enjoyed going to visit him while he worked.

Very interesting---saw some cotton fields in N.C. but never this big.

And thank Gog for Eli Whitney, the inventor of the cotton gin. Can you imagine picking those little fluffs off the plant. Now that was work.

I picked cotton one summer,
earned enough for new shoes
and a bag.
When the bolls are dry they
cut your hands to ribbons.
