Depends on the quilt. But I have tied many.

This past spring a few of us got together and tied two antique quilts that would not lay really flat, and they had been hand pieced so didn't want to ruin the integrity so we hand tied.

Tying is many times a great alternative to hand or machine quilting. Don't listen to anyone that says tying is not quilting. It is definitely a form of quilting.

I tie T-Shirt quilts. There is no way I could hand quilt through all those layers (T-shirt plus fusible interfacing batting and backing) and the T-Shirt quilts I made were way too heavy to try and machine quilt on my domestic machine.

I have tied lots of quilts for charity. It isn't my favorite method and I am always afraid to tie a quilt for an infant. It is sad, but many people don't appreciate a tied quilt like a quilted quilt. At least that has been my experience.

When I started quilting I tied everything and thought I'd never want to hand quilt (wrong - I find it relaxing and enjoy it). Our guild ties all our charity quilts. I like the look of it, somehow it's old-fashioned and cozy looking.

I just helped my Grandma tie hers. She was doing her first quilt, and got a little discouraged how long it was taking, so we tied it! I am so proud of her for finishing it, and she is tickled to have it done. I really like it too, was a good one to be tied!

I would like to. I have heard you need a special needle which I seem to be unable to find :(

Could anyone direct me in the right direction for finding a needle that will allow me to tie with yarn?

    Thank you so much

Most of my quilts have been tied, I have quilted a few though.

Conniequilts- I use a curved needle when I tie.

I like the old timey look of tied quilts too and sometimes add ties to part of the quilt to evoke that feel. Also when I teach a newbie to quilt I often encourage them tie their first quilt project especially if they are a child. Curently I am making a quilt that I will tie an odd assortment of old buttons too, one in the center of each block. My son's fiancee's mother only ties all her quilts and I have heard of other people. Maybe not as common but you are not the only one.

I haven't yet but I want to do a scrappy quilt and tie it. I see so many quilts tied on old westerns and old movies and most of them are scrappy and tied. Really don't know why I haven't tied a quilt yet, they really look vintage.
