When making a large qilt, I only use double--but I also do lots of small decorative quilts. Just bound some 3" Christmas ornaments. I cut 1.25" strips for a single fold binding. I press the .25" hem in the strip before I sew it on. Once binding is sewn on,the hem is nice and crisp and then I sew the edge down either by hand or machine--depending on how quick I need it (I love to blindstitch hems--very soothing for me.)
The narrower, single binding is less bulky and more in proportion to my itty bitties.

The first quilt I made, I took fabric from the back and tucked it up over the quilt to make the binding. I didn't know any "better." It is still fine - and that was 25 years ago. If you only have enuogh fabric for single binding and the person is careful, go for it!

Oh gee ----- I wish I had known this 15 quilts ago as I always used single binding. The reason being I'm terrible at mitered corners and can manage them reasonably with only a singe layer of fabric. Time to bite the bullet I guess and go with double and LEARN how to do a respectable corner. Are there any good tutorials on that???

Double for me, but not just for the wearability. It is so much easier to work with than trying to fold a single layer of binding. Try ironing that 1/4" fold evenly!!! Too much work. You can iron the whole thing in half in much less time and with much less frustration. I am frustrated just thinking about it

There was a tutorial on here not too long ago about stitching your binding with another color so it looked like a flange (do I have the right word??) when sewn onto the quilt. That looked really neat and would solve the problem of not enough fabric for a double binding.
