If you use a white background the white pieces will blend in to the background and the same with red. With all the piecing work you are doing you want the plates to show up well but I can't imagine that pattern on black. What about a beige tone or a light color of some sort?

I just saw a Sewing with Nancy segment on Dresden Plate. It was fascinating the many ways to change this by adding a few more applique dresden plates or changing fabrics. I do agree, take a trip to your quilt shop and see what strikes your fancy! This is my favorite tip/trick for all my projects, just take a trip to the quilt shop with my project in hand and see what works best for me. Have fun, it sure is a beauty even w/o the background!
