Nice pieces! I would starch the you-know-what out of the 2 pieces, then check that the front piece covers the back piece. Then stitch around each piece 1/8" from edge with a large basting stitch. This will keep pieces from shifting. Then sew with right sides together and turn.

Why not make two runners, with top, batting and backing on each. Quilt them separately then put the two together back to back and bind. This idea may not work for you, a lot of layers to go thru for binding, but it is just a thought.

Looking at the keyboard, it is possibly a typo since the d is next to the s. So that makes it a basting stitch, aka long stitches.
