I save mine whether they be wood or plastic. Every once in awhile someone in my guild asks if anyone has any empty spools and then any who save spools gives them to them. I have a hard time throwing things away. I finally gave my collection of round oatmeal boxes to the nearby elementary school. Some of us grew up with parents from the depression.

I had my great niece & nephew make Xmas decorations out of them. They painted them with craft paint, then we threaded a wire thru them, added alot of beads top & bottom, then they glued sequins on them. They turned out real cute but they took them all home so I can't show you one. If I can find a picture, I'll post it.

Make a wind chime! Don't know how much noise it would make, but it would be a good conversation piece. It will be interesting to hear what people say about this topic. I toss mine, but every time I do I wonder if I am going to regret it...

I give mine to several groups. GS, sr center, and the larger ones go to the charity quilting group as they buy thread on large industrial cones and then use the empty spools to fill up with that thread so they can make kits ladies can take home to sew!
