    Default What direction to sew??

Here is my question: When sewing down crosshatching, I can never remember if I'm supposed to sew every seam in the same direction, or start in a corner and alternate seam directions.

This question refers to my domestic machines as well as my antique machines. And I'll print out the answer and paste it on my bulletin board for future reference!

I have been gifted with a Willcox and Gibbs chainstitcher. I'd like to make quilted Christmas placemats, using the chain stitcher, as a thank you gift. So I cannot use my walking foot for obvious reasons.

    Thanks,

Alternate ... so go down one direction and up the other.
I usually do two angling one way, then two the other, to make a big X.

After that, I continue doing much the same, with a few in each of the four sections created,
then on to the next, keeping a balance.

If you are crosshatching a square, somewhere on the net there is a diagram to sew them all in one go continuous without stopping. It is based on rectangles and I think I saw it on Pinterest with the lines in colour. I have not tried it but it looked like a neat way to do it.

Thank you. I’m off now to give it a try. I’ve made two practice pieces to try it out before the real deal.

When I sew from corner to corner across squares . I start in he center and do half, turn other way and do other half. I do the same on other half until done.
