I keep pondering how they ended up in the bags of fabric since there were no dead animals or a food source? But, yes, bedbugs is a REAL concern. We had the pleasure of being eaten alive in a $300 per night hotel room in Morro Bay, CA. We found out later the place had a history of complaints and we kept 12 or so in a jar in case we needed legal guidance. We got our money refunded but the horror of that night and discovering those bedbugs will stick with us. Doing all the research we had to do we found bedbugs live in fabric and mattresses coming out at night to feed on blood. The easiest way to transport them into your home is buy purchasing furniture, clothes, bedding and fabric with them. They are like pin dots when small, so can't easily be seen by the naked eye. I'm all for a good bargain, but immediately in the wash and hot dryer!!! But, 200 yards of fabric for $40 with no harm done, was worth it. If I don't think about it too much <shudder>.

Well....do flies manage to infiltrate Eastern states? I think they do. Any informed folks know if maggots or critters lie dormant in the winter? I would bet money they do. I think high heat, from say a dryer would be the best bet?

I am SO glad I read this post. I am going to pick up seven garbage bags full of fabric from a lady this weekend. She has stored them for three years... since her mother passed away. I will definitely make sure I wash the fabric as soon as I bring it in my house.

I'm a prewasher too, for exactly this reason. Almost all of my fabric except for some fat quarters which I am thinking I need to wash now, comes in the house and in the machine...usually on hot...and in a hot dryer, too.
I might be less adamant about it if I only bought fabric from fabric stores, but I get mine at thrift/yard/estate sales. No way do I trust it until I've cleaned it!
