Hey everyone just wanted to give you a heads up - I purchased about 3 dozen fat quarters from Joann's - every one of them was short by 2" - they are 18"x20" - just beware. I have written to Joann's management team to find out what they are going to do about it. I'll keep you posted.

the fabric co's are going to a 40" wide fabric instead of 44-45"
so all the fat quarters will be 18x20
which is a fat quarter of that fabric

your fats were not as wide as you expected but odds are that they are correct.

fat quarters are 18" by the width of the fabric.

if the fabric was only 40" wide, your fat quarters would be 18 x 20

if the fabric was wider but they trimmed off the selvages, it could still be "only" 18 x 20 but correct.

since most quilting fabrics are between 40 and 44 inches wide, if a fat quarter is properly cut to 18" high, it will average between 20 and 22 inches wide.

TO REPEAT: your fats were not as wide as you expected but odds are that they are correct.

I also noticed that they have some that are not called fat quarters...I think they are just called quarter pieces or something - that is the majority of them at our store.., and they are not tru fat quarters....deception in advertising, I think. They know we expected them to be fat quarters the way they are packaged..I just returned several for that same reason...

I am sure they are labeling them in this manner due to Patrice's explanation
I am guessing we will see more labeled this way as 40" WOF becomes another industry standard :D
