I think it looks fine just the way it is. Your cowboy is great. I agree, ask your customer if she thinks it's too dark. If so just a light border should do the trick.

I also agree with QuiltnNan about adding brighter colored appliques in the plain blocks, even if you only added yellow horseshoes or hats, although it is a beautiful quilt and you did such a great job on your cowboy. Nicely done.

I would quilt the large blue blocks with a variegated blue thread. Just my thought...

I would quilt with a bright color on the solid blocks... like ORANGE. Lots of squiggly lines would allow the bright colored thread to really show up.

Don't really have an answer, but love your quilt, and especially, the little cowboys!!

I love your quilt and everything blue. I bought a quilt in Egypt all shades of dark blue no borders. Still love it too.

Appliqué yellow stars or stitch yellow thread in the solid blue squares.

If you use a bright variegated thread to quilt the blue solid squares I think that would brighten it up enough for a great kid look. Even just a swirly meander to look like Lassos would be great and still kid friendly.

Ah,ha,ha! I love this quilt! I guess it has to be quilted but I don't have any suggestions. I would like to see it when you are done quilting it.
