I use a the Longaberger picnic basket for a sewing basket. They have all kinds of baskets with lids.

I have the blue one pictured. And it's on sale!

It has a tray inside, lots of room for spools of thread and a pin cushion on the inside of the lid.
I love mine, especially when I hand sew in the living room.

Not sure how much you want to spend but I love my reproduction shaker sewing box. I have had it for over 10 years and it is still going strong. I also have a pin cushion that is set in a round shaker box.

You made me go look, thank you. JoAnn's has the Janet Baskets' on sale 1/2 price and a free shipping coupon until Tuesday. I just ordered 4, I really love them. They are so easy to carry from one place to another.
