Hello--So I am new to quilting in general, but not sewing etc. I wanted to try my hand at machine quilting. I have a vintage Singer 99 machine which is a 3/4 size machine, but had the guts to try quilting using it. (I have other upholstery/heavy duty machines that I really didn't want to use for the quilt). Anyway, I looked all over the internet, found all this info that I MUST use a walking foot. Ok.....so I get one, and gave it a try on scrap. Wanted to just do Stitch in the Ditch--so I got that foot as well. Well, my vintage machine did not like the walking foot at all. I even got a singer brand. It fit fine on it, but was so awkward to use. It took up so much space, I barely could get the quilt under the pressure foot (yes it was up). So after being very frustrated with the walking foot, I tried the stitch in the ditch foot. This foot was good for keeping things lined up, but I got (as expected) to much drag and bunching. So I had a thought. I needed something I was more familiar with, that wouldn't cause to much drag on the top of the fabric. Something that would align my needle up with the ditch-------THE ZIPPER FOOT. I tried it and it was great. I went slow at first but it worked so much better then either of the other 2 feet. No back bunching, no front drag-----I didn't even stretch to much going across the jelly roll race quilt that I was doing. Am I the only one out there that ditched modern tech, and used something as small and simple as a zipper foot to quilt a quilt????

I’ve never used a zipper foot to quilt a quilt, but it is my go to foot when I want to machine bind a quilt on my straight stitch only machine. I just use the regular foot to stitch the binding on the back, then the zipper foot to stitch it down on front- works like a charm.

I’m going to try your method for stitch in the ditch.

Haven't thought of using the zipper foot, it seems a good idea, but I hate using the walking foot. On my Brother machines I find it too bulky behind the needle and more trouble than it's worth.

I have never tried using the zipper foot for quilting, but will definitely give that a try. I am machine quilting on t-shirt blocks right now with the walking foot and can be difficult. I do believe on my next project I will try the zipper foot. Thanks so much for sharing.
